Daily Prayer Guide: Tuesday Dec 8

Isaiah 40:1-11

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed,
that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD’s hand
double for all her sins.
A voice of one calling:
“In the desert prepare the way for the LORD;
make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low;
the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.
And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it.
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
A voice says, “Cry out.”
And I said, “What shall I cry?”
“All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field.
The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them.
Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.”

You who bring good tidings to Zion, go up on a high mountain.
You who bring good tidings to Jerusalem,
lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid;
say to the towns of Judah, “Here is your God!”
See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power, and his arm rules for him.
See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him.
He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

Meditation

This passage is a string of proclamations about God – amazing truths being called out, cried out, and shouted.  It’s basically a bunch of really good news, packed into one unit. It’s saying: we have cause to take comfort and celebrate!

Why?

Because God has paid for our sin. We have freedom from guilt and have been completely restored to rightness with Him. (vv. 1-2)

Because God is coming. He’ll make a path through the desolate wilderness and through the barren desert; He’ll completely change the landscape. (vv.3-4)

Because God’s awesome greatness will someday be revealed, not just to a select few, but to everyone in the whole world. (v. 5)

Because even though our human lives are temporary, God’s word lasts forever. In being living representations of His word, we can be part of something significant and lasting. (vv.6-8)

Because God has asked us to be messengers about who He is. In a broken world, we have been given the meaningful role of representing who He is.  (v. 9)

We celebrate Him because He is
a glorious King…
an inclusive Redeemer…
and a loving Shepherd…
all wrapped up in one.

Reflection and Prayer

Go to a place where you can read and pray without distractions.
Start out by asking God that His Spirit would speak to you through this passage.
Read through the text several times more:
-The first time, read it through quickly like you’re reading a story.
-The second time, read it through slowly, and underline a couple key words or phrases that stand out to you.
-The third time, take time to linger on the phrases you underlined and talk to God about them. Thank Him for who He is and what He’s done.
