Daily Prayer Guide – Thursday, Dec 3

PSALM 2
LET EARTH RECEIVE HER KING

“You’re not the boss of me.” Admit it. You’ve felt like that.

Recall a time in your life when you said that in your head – or out loud – to someone. What circumstance, conversation or characteristics provoked it? What attitudes accompanied that statement? What actions followed? What was the outcome of that conversation or relationship?

Pray for humility to receive all that God wants to say to you today.

Read Psalm 2

Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One. “Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.”

The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, “I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.”

I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”

Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment.

Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

On a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle. On the top, left side draw a few little crowns, representing “the kings of the earth”. On the top, right side, draw a throne (art-challenged? Draw an upside-down 4), representing “the One enthroned in heaven”.

In the left column write down your observations of the actions of those with earthly authority, their attitudes, and their aims.

In the right column write down the attributes of the Lord and “his Anointed One”, their actions and possible actions, and the Lord’s attitudes.

Put the paper on the floor at your feet. Look at the 2 columns.

Which side are you on? Who’s the boss of you?

How do you feel about being under the authority of this One enthroned in heaven? Are you trying to rule your own world, or even just a piece of it, rebelling against God? Or are you rejoicing under God’s rule, taking refuge in His strength?

Get on your knees.

Gather up every excuse you’ve been using to disconnect from God’s authority. Put them all at God’s feet. With face to the ground, praise your Lord and King for His power and His authority to judge, to rule and to bless.
